Women are craving the new Sientra silicone gel breast implants
There’s a new Gummy Bear that has been capturing the attention of women all over the world. While it’s not the small fruity gummies, it is filling an appetite for many women who are learning about this new technology recently approved by the FDA and named for it’s cohesive, natural looking results.
In the United States, the standard for implants (since the FDA moratorium in 1992) has been the widely used saline-filled option. These new cohesive “Gummy Bear” breast implants are unique due to their firmer feel and because they have an increased ability to hold their shape. This is making them very desirable to many women, including those who have had silicone implants in the past. The “Gummy Bear” implant’s gel is much firmer than standard silicone-based implants and some have described it as a soft solid. The term “cohesive” is used for these new breast implants as it accurately describes their stability, and ability to hold their shape no matter what position they are in.
Dr. Grant Stevens, a Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon of Marina Plastic Surgery, coined the phrase “Gummy Bear” in reference to the new implants as one of the surgeons involved with the development of the product. Stevens explained the name by saying, “Gummy bear breast implants are made of a cohesive silicone gel that’s similar in texture to a gummy bear candy, and even though they hold their shape, they are still extremely soft and flexible and have a very natural look and feel.” Recently being quoted in Allure magazine Stevens added, “I wanted to be able to explain how the implants are soft like natural breast tissue but also hold their shape. The name ‘gummy bear’ just stuck, partly because it’s a great way for patients to learn about what differentiates various Los Angeles implant options.” Covered by Nightline on ABC, the new implants are made by a company called Sientra and were approved in March by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Many women interested or in need of breast augmentation are taking advantage of the new ‘gummy bear’ cohesive-gel breast implants as a way to provide a longer lasting, more durable and more natural looking alternative to the standard silicone-based implants. Some women are expressing that they are glad to have a choice that was not available to them up until now.
